Assistants are great at a lot of things, but they aren’t always the fastest route. Knowing when to stop delegating is a skill.

Signs it’s your turn

  • Two or more attempts with the same failure.
  • You could describe the fix in one sentence.
  • Explaining the context would take longer than doing the work.
  • The change touches something you need to understand deeply anyway (auth, billing, data migrations).

Then use it differently

Write the fix yourself and ask the assistant to review it, write the tests, or explain the parts you’re unsure of. You stay in control; it stays useful.
